Dream On:
We’ll be streaming more amazing Aerosmith lullaby tracks over the next few weeks. Be sure to check back here often if you don’t want to miss a thing. Sorry, we couldn’t resist!
As we already wrote about here, this is a very special release for us because Steven Tyler wrote the liner notes. The original bad boy from Boston gives it a big thumbs up. In fact he says he has a grandson he can’t wait to play it for.

Baby Shower Gift Of The Week: Prenatal Massage
Posted on Jul 28
Most baby shower gifts are for after the little one comes out, but ask any expectant mother and she’ll tell you that she could use a little attention. So why not show the bearer of child a little love and get her a gift certificate for prenatal massage from a local spa? It’s wise to call ahead and make sure that they have a therapist on staff with experience, but the gentle hands of a gifted bodyworker can make many of the atrocious aches of motherhood fade for a while. And if the little one is late, there’s evidence that massage can ease the transition into labor – which could be the greatest gift you may ever give.
Great Kid Bands – Da Hip Hop Raskalz
Posted on Jul 27Dave Soldier is one of my favorite ambassadors of the world of music. He travels the world working with pretty much every kind of person (and animal – the man has recorded and released a CD of elephant music) in the world, and the results of his experiments are universally fantastic.
One of the best is the CD he developed with East Harlem grade school students. Soldier teaches the kids every step of the recording process, from drum programming and sampling to lyric writing and rapping. The results are spectacular, professional-sounding joints with amazing lyrics about candy, dinosaurs, and life in New York City. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Muppet Mashup: Remixes of Your Favorite Sesame Street Tunes
Posted on Jul 24
Everybody knows how crazy I am about the music from Sesame Street and The Muppet Show. Well, apparently I’m not the only one, as a group of Boston-based DJs and musicians just knocked out “Muppet Mashup,” a ten-track tribute to those great songs that demands a place on your iPod toute suite.

Stuff We Like: Disney Pixar’s Up
Posted on Jul 23If you haven’t seen Pixar’s Up yet, get thee to a theater immediately, with or without your little one in tow. It’s the most emotionally rich film the studio has ever produced, and that’s coming from a guy who cried watching Wall-E. With plenty of exciting action to keep the young ones on the edge of their seat, it’s a perfect family film. One of the main ingredients in its success is Michael Giacchino’s excellent score, which merges majestic orchestral sweeps with unforgettable melodies. Unfortunately, if you want to take the soundtrack on your iPod, you can’t go out to your local record store and pick it up – for some perplexing reason, Disney has decided to not release it as physical media. Instead, the collection was unceremoniously dumped on iTunes. But the digital distribution has it’s advantages – it comes with an exclusive 7-minute featurette. Sure, it’ll probably wind up on the DVD anyways, but don’t you want to watch it now? You do.
Baby Shower Gift Of The Week: Diapers.Com
Posted on Jul 22
Oh, diapers – truly they are the most guilt-inducing thing about being a parent. Pick cloth ones and have to deal with the enormous hassle of cleaning them, plus knowing that you’re wasting energy and using toxic chemicals to get the poo out. Pick disposables and you’re contributing to the growing landfills that dot our great nation. And don’t even get me started on “elimination communication.” A new parent has enough to worry about without having to buy diapers, which is why I recommend flipping them some gift certificates to diapers.com, by far the most cost-effective place to buy the damn things anywhere. Throw in all sorts of other baby supplies and you’ll be able to take a load of mom and dad’s mind when they need it most.
New Children’s Music From Rick Springfield and Ziggy Marley
Posted on Jul 21A number of grown-up musicians are dipping their toes into the kiddie pool this year, with varying levels of success. Here’s my quick overview of recent releases.
Rick Springfield – My Precious Little One: Lullabies For A New Generation
The “Jessie’s Girl” singer is long past his teen idol days, with a pair of sons in their twenties. This album, which contains newly recorded versions of songs he wrote for his kids when they were infants, is a far cry from the bombastic arena pop that he’s normally known for. The ten songs are remarkably gentle, sweet, and soothing, and Springfield’s voice works well with the subdued material. I think all parents make up songs for their kids (I know I do), but they’re rarely as memorable as these.
Ziggy Marley – Family Time
Reggae is just naturally kid-friendly music – the relaxed tempos, bouncing bass lines and fun sound effects grab kids by the ears and don’t let go. So it’s no surprise that the first kids’ album from Ziggy Marley, the heir to the throne of reggae legend Bob Marley, would be a success. “Family Time” is solid from top to bottom – almost. The album is full of guest stars, including a great Paul Simon spot, but who had the bright idea to close it out with not one but two Jamie Lee Curtis spoken word pieces? They fall embarrassingly flat and leave a sour taste in the mouth.
Bob Marley – B Is For Bob
Ziggy is sadly less successful on this other project, in which he remixes eight of his father’s best-loved songs to better suit younger ears. While a few of the tracks benefit from the tinkering, the majority of them were better (and just as kid-friendly) in their original incarnations. Most of Marley’s music is sonically fine for kids, so you’re better off going for the originals – or the Rockabye Baby Marley volume. One notable exception on this album is “Jamming,” which adds a crazy, danceable energy to the tune, but it’s not enough to recommend the record.
No Wrong Notes: Cool Music Classes For Kids
Posted on Jul 20
New York City kids have access to all the coolest things, but one of the coolest I’ve heard about lately is Paul “Ubertar” Rubenstein, who teaches some of the most awesome and unclassifiable music classes on the planet. First he takes his kids and has them help him build one-stringed, microtonal, adjustable-fret electric guitars, tuned so that there are no “wrong notes.” And then, with their new knowledge of music theory and their handmade axes, they jam. And boy, do they ever jam – the music they make is exciting, inspiring, and completely unlike anything else.
You can read more about his classes and listen to some of the music at his website: http://ubertar.com/kids9
