Appreciating the value of music while recognizing the necessity of a child’s sense of wonder and innocence is an art – and we love nothing more than when these two worlds overlap. Needless to say we were thrilled when we heard of the collaboration between Colin Meloy of The Decemberists and his wife Carson Ellis for an upcoming children’s book, The Unfortunate Demise of Whitley Rackham, which is “set in 1920s Butte, Montana and features a talking cat.”

According to Ellis’s blog, “It’s been in the works for years but it’s completion seems to be on the horizon.” We’ll definitely be keeping our eyes on the horizon for this one.

It’s that time of year again when everyone comes together to celebrate everything we are thankful for…friends, family and for some happy families even a brand new baby. Help them share this joyful holiday with the newest addition to their family the right way – by teaching them the tradition of eating way more than their little belly’s can handle.

We love the personalized “I’m Stuffed” Thanksgiving Infant Bib because of the sensible nature of the item, but especially for the cuteness factor. And let’s be honest-baby is not the only member of the family who will need a bib on Thanksgiving. Unfortunately for those of us at the grown up’s table, these are available in infant sizes only.

Make sure you check out these tips we compiled for making the most of baby’s first Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! This healthy baby food recipe makes us wish we ate baby food. Okay, sometimes we do.

(For Babies 6 Months & Up * Makes about 40 Tablespoons)

INGREDIENTS:

1 Small Cooking Pumpkin (or Butternut Squash), Peeled, Seeds Removed, and Diced
1 Medium Banana1 Pinch Ground Cinnamon
1 Pinch Ground Ginger (Optional)Water from Steaming or Pure Apple Juice

DIRECTIONS:

Place diced pumpkin in a pan with a steamer basket. Add enough water so that it just comes to the bottom of the steamer basket. Steam until very tender, about 15 minutes.

Transfer to a blender or food processor. Add banana, cinnamon and ginger. Puree until smooth. Thin with water from steaming, apple juice, or formula to desired consistency. Set aside to cool. Divide into ice cube trays, cover with plastic wrap and freeze. When frozen, transfer to a freezer bag for storage.

Have you ever wanted a good way to get your kids more involved with music? We think we may have found just the thing: Learn to Speak Music: A Guide to Creating, Performing, and Promoting Your Songs, written by the singer-songwriter John Crossingham of the popular Canadian indie band Broken Social Scene. “Learn to Speak Music helps kids learn the simplicity of this universal language by exposing every nook and cranny of how music is made.” Playlists are listed throughout the book to offer examples of musical elements such as dynamics, lyrics, classic live performances, and to demonstrate the difference between lo-fi and hi-fi. We are also eager to see the tips in the margin from musical artists (and fellow Broken Social Scene members) such as Feist, Emily Haines and Kevin Drew. Pick up a copy of the book and help your children discover the exciting world of music!

p.s. Help out with the learning process by creating a mixtape of the songs from each playlists then sit down with your kids and explore them together.
