I don’t have many close friends or family with kids who can be considered “children” right now (outside of my cousin who has 4 boys under the age of 5…yeah, he has his hands full, but Christmas is going to be hilarious).
Anyway, it bums me out a little because kids are rad. Even the kids that are kind of jerks can be rad. As a former swimming instructor, I connected with a lot of my students. From watching them perfect their backstrokes, to encouraging them to take the jump off the high board or finally convincing them (really just one of them) they didn’t need to pee in the pool to be cool; not much has been more rewarding than seeing those kids succeed. I miss them . . . they’re probably like 20 now.
However, I did receive some good news: My best friend’s sister gave birth to her first child a few weeks ago and I am over the moon with excitement about being his “aunt” and possible swimming instructor. If he’s anything like his mom and dad, he’s going to be one funny kid.
So let’s celebrate your kids and all the kids in the world today with a little giveaway!

There’s one photo I’ll never forget from my childhood. It was of my grandfather in his U.S. Army uniform that always sat on my grandmother’s desk. He was a lieutenant during World War II. It looked like such a distant time to me when I’d stare at it as a child, because it was a sepia print and he was so young!
I was lucky enough to spend time with him for quite a few years before he passed. He was always smiling, affectionate with my grandmother and loved being surrounded by his “army” of grandchildren. I think in total there were 14. (Sorry, cousins, if I missed any of you!) But when I think of him now, it’s always that younger man’s face that I remember versus the grandfather in his sixties who had little hair, plenty of loveable wrinkles and wore glasses. I’m not sure why.
No one in the family really talked about his time in the army. And none of us really asked. But what my dad did tell me, as I got older, was that our family would not be where we are today if not for his service. So, thank you, Grandpa, you’re my hero.
Share your dedications and thoughts below by Sunday, Nov. 17, 6 pm PT, and you’ll be entered in our random giveaway for a Rockabye Baby CD of your choice, which we hope you’ll share with all the heroes in your life. Two (2) winners will be selected.

Did I ever mention that I’m a wannabe Canadian? I lived a glorious year and a half in Montreal some years back, traveled to Vancouver for Expo ’84, got soaked by the falls in Niagara and have visited family in Toronto, as well as the funny-named Mississauga. And I’d go back again and again and again.
And, for a long time, I’ve been a huge fan of bands and performers from across the border, from Malajube and Arcade Fire, in recent years, to Rush — if just for the awesome drum set — and even Anne Murray, who rocks very slowly. (As I write this, my husband is playing “Danny’s Song” on iTunes. He loves that line, “Even though we ain’t got money, I’m so in love with you honey…”)
So to celebrate our Canadian friends, we’re giving away a Canada Rocks Bundle that includes lullaby renditions of Rush, The Tragically Hip and Nickelback, to one lucky winner.
To be entered into this random giveaway…
Tell us why Canada rocks.
Post your reasons below by Friday, Oct. 18, 8PM PT and you’ll be entered into our random draw for the Canada Rocks Bundle.
We talk a lot about rocking out (gently) here at Rockabye Baby, but you know what great music gets people to do? DANCE. So we pulled videos of some our favorite guys doing just that…dancing like there’s no tomorrow.
“Weapon of Choice,” Fat Boy Slim, featuring Christopher Walken
Before people saw this video, few people knew that actor Christopher Walken had trained as a dancer. And, boy, does he have moves. Check it.
“Dancing in the Street,” David Bowie and Mick Jagger
You either hate or love this song and video with two of rock’s icons. It’s pretty silly, but who else could pull off such ensembles or moves? By the way, did you know Van Halen also covered this song?
Daddy-in-Training dancing to “Indigo Blues” by Llorca featuring Nicole Graham
And we were going to mention the famous Footloose dance scene, but that’s too predictable. Plus, we think this ’80s dance scene from Breakin’ beats it by a longshot.
Now, for today’s giveaway, we want to know:
What song do you have to dance to?
Tell us what song (or songs) make you get up and dance to enter to win this trio of lullaby renditions of artists whose dance moves made them music legends. Post your answers by Sunday, Sept. 29, 8PM PT, to be entered!
Baby’s cries making you wish a hero would save you? Fear not, parents, for these peaceful renditions of Nickelback’s best-loved songs will remind you what quiet sounds like. This is your child’s very own lullaby.
