Is “C is for Cookie” your go-to song for banishing temper tantrums? Is “Rubber Ducky” how you get your toddler into the bath? Then, you’ll definitely want to make note of this. The Orchard, a digital music company, is making Sesame Street music available to its fans all over the world with a new catalogue. It includes songs that have been performed on the show by such singers as Celine Dion, R.E.M. and Stevie Wonder.

Classic Sesame Street songs will also be re-mixed to create some one-of-a-kind hits. Favorites such as “People in Your Neighborhood” and “Mah Na Ma Na” are in there, too. Before Stevie Wonder was ripping it on the clavichord with “Superstition,” he was just a kid, playing songs for Motown CEO/producer Barry Gordy, with dreams of making it big despite his lack of sight.

Born Stevland Hardaway Judkins, Wonder was found by Gerald White of the band The Miracles, who pestered his brother Ronnie to check out this amazing kid. He had heard Wonder at a friend’s house and finally got Ronnie to see the talented boy perform. Reportedly, Ronnie was so impressed he took Stevland to Gordy who dubbed the boy Little Stevie Wonder because he was “the eighth wonder of the world,” and signed him at age 11.

Wonder would go on to record several albums under the name, until the mid-1960’s when he’d drop the “Little.”  Beforehand, he had a few hits, most notably “Fingertips (Pt. 2),“ which featured Marvin Gaye playing drums.

Here are some videos/songs from that time in Stevie’s life:

Contract on Love

Last weekend I saw Stevie Wonder perform live at the Bonnaroo Music Festival. I obviously knew Stevie’s hits but I had no idea that he put on such a great show. The man is sixty years old and blind since just after birth, and at a festival with over 100 acts he was the best thing about it. Aside from playing all his hits, he brought the audience in for sing-alongs including “Uptight (Everything’s Alright)”, gave us a singing lesson, and (here’s the most important part, and the reason why I think he deserves a mention on Rockabye) throughout the entire set he reiterated the importance of peace, love and harmony. Wonder proved himself to be the most upbeat, exuberant performer, leading an ecstatic crowd of 70,000 people in dance moves.

Stevie has won more Grammys than any other male solo artist (22), and he has recorded over 30 top-ten hits, but I think most people will remember him for the positivity and joy his music brings to everyday life. His music is upbeat and danceable and his message of love is a great lesson to pass on to your kids.
