Giant Jenga: DIY Summer Yard Game

Summer is HERE! I'm ready for beers, burgers and the beach. To further celebrate (outside of beers, burgers and the beach), getting outdoors is our top priority with some DIY summer yard games. This perfect weather won't last forever. We LOVE this Giant Jenga idea from the gals over at A Beautiful Mess. The colors actually fit perfectly with our color scheme, too! Learn how to make your own here. giant jenga   Classic Jenga: There is a minimum two players. Players can only use hand to touch the tower at any time, but the can switch hands in play. 1) In levels of three, stack the blocks. 2) The player must take that block and place it on the topmost level. 3) The game ends when the tower falls -- completely or if any block falls from the tower (other than the block a player moves on a turn). Now to add our own little spin to this fun toppling game, we thought of two ways you can add a little more pizazz to your Giant Jenga or a Little Jenga. Rock Trivia: Write a 1, 2 or 3 on each board. Create a list of 48 rock trivia questions (click link for some of our own) placing 16 each in the categories Easy (1), Medium (2) and Hard (3). When playing, if you draw a board that reads 2, that's how many extra points you'll get if you that level answer in rock trivia question correctly. This way if your team topples the tower, you could still win with extra points you’ve earned through trivia! Band That Starts with . . . : Select a different letter for each board. R, S, T, L, M, E—whatever you'd like. There are 48 boards so repeats are okay! For whichever letter is on the board you draw, you have to name a band that starts with that letter. Suppose you draw a "D." You could say Dio, Deathcab for Cutie, Dokken, etc. Name one within 10  seconds and you get 1 extra point! Not too hard right? Plus, each of these options is a great way to familiarize your kids with rock facts and names. Win, win, win. Check out more fun outdoor activities here!

Play Date Etiquette

“Play date” is a term that, like “synergy” or “bleeding edge,” makes me gag when I hear it. I hate the idea of a play date: parents turning their kid’s precious little free time into a scheduled c...
